Freshman Focus 3/30/15 – 4/3/15

30 Mar

MONDAY – FRIDAY

Be sure to update your planner on Monday.  Just some reminders about your planner:

  • Carry your planner with you each day/they will be randomly checked and no late turn in.
  • Update your goals/plans each Monday for the week. A goal can be used for two weeks in a row only but your plan must change.
  • List your homework each period, if no homework write NH and give a brief description of what you did in class that day.
  • Check off your homework as you complete it or make a forward arrow if you are moving the activity to tomorrow.
  • Be sure to write in up-coming due dates for assignments in all classes.
  • REMEMBER!  your planner is only as effective as you make it.  Filling in the information all at once at the last minute is not a good use of your time and it does not help you keep organized.

Progressing through GMetrix.  Check your card on the counter if you are unsure of what you need to complete next.  Remember when you have finished a training or test you need to pick up your card off the desk and place it in the wire basket on my desk–I will record your progress in Skyward by the end of the day each day.  Testing will be given Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Your progress card will be placed in front of a "testing" computer so you will know where to sit if you are taking the MIcrosoft Test.  You should now be working on PowerPoint, obtaining a 95% or above on trainings and testings.  All trainings and tests on PowerPoint should be completed prior to spring vacation.  If you need to use Conference Period after school the lab is open until 3:00 or the 200 lab is open until 3:30.  You will be able to take the Microsoft PowerPoint Test when we return from vacation.

02 Mar

MONDAY:

Update your planner today with a new school and personal goal for the week.  Be sure to put a "plan of action" on how you will specifically reach your goal.  If the goal is the same as last week, you should change the plan.  The same goal cannot be used more than two weeks in a row.  Remember that the planner will be randomly checked and if you forget your planner on the check day you cannot turn it in late.

Be sure to check Skyward frequently as I am updating grades on a daily basis while we are in the GMetrix training/Microsoft Testing.  Remember the lab is open until 3:00 daily (unless otherwise announced) and the 200 lab is open until 3:30 daily (unless otherwise announced).  If you are an early riser the 100 lab is open at 6:30 a.m.  If for some reason I am ever absent you can also go to Room 906.  Each lab has knowledgable people to help you if needed.

GMetrix Progress:  I have supplied a card for you to track your progress.  You should be finishing up WORD this week and have the Microsoft Testing complted by 3/13.  As you work through GMetrix you need a 95% or above on trainings and testings (this way we know you are prepared for the final Microsoft Test).  When you complete a training or test pick up your card on the counter and place it in the wire basket on my desk.  I will record your information in Skyward on a daily basis so there should be no questions as to what you still need to complete,  I am now looking at you as an individual and you need to be progressing as your skills allows.

TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY:

Progressing through GMetrix.  Check your card on the counter if you are unsure of what you need to complete next.  Remember when you have finished a training or test you need to pick up your card off the desk and place it in the wire basket on my desk–I will record your progress in Skyward by the end of the day each day.  Testing will be given Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Your progress card will be placed in front of a "testing" computer so you will know where to sit if you are taking the MIcrosoft Test.

Freshman Focus 1/27/15 – 1/30/15

27 Jan

MondayNo school this is a grading day for teachers.

Tuesday:   We will be going over the course syllabus today Freshman Focus Syllabus 2014-2015 and ago over the behavior agreement Freshman Focus Classroom Behavior Agreement 8 14. You will also need to purchase a planner by this Friday, 1/20/15 at the ASB office for $5.

Wednesday: Begin speech preparation for About Me speeches. Refer to the grading rubric in thre sharing folder for details.  At the end of the period hand in your speech outline (directions were given verbally and are written on the white board).

Thursday: About me speeches begin.

Friday:

Friday: Today you will complete a Learning Styles Inventory. To start, please go to the link below:

http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory/questions.php?cookieset=y

This site is free so it does have advertisements; please ignore them. There are 70 questions for you to answer. See the answer legend at the top of the page, I have copied and pasted it here:

Note: Answer each statement in the following manner:
0 – the statement is nothing like me
1 – the statement is partially like me
2 – the statement is very much like me

So read each statement. If the statement is nothing like you, put a zero in the box. If the statement is kind of like you put a 1 in the box and so on. Take the time to read each one and answer truthfully. You will have a written assignment today based on your answers.

Once you have completed the 70 questions, click the "submit" button.

This will take you to the "General Information" tab.You do not need to fill out all of the information sheet. You are ok to skip parts. Type in your first and last name capitalized correctly. You are welcome to use your school email address (first.last@camas.wednet.edu) even though that email is not active. It is just something to put in the screen so you can view your free results.See the screen shot example I have put below.

Leave the ATTRIBUTES and GROUP DETAILS sections blank. Nothing needs to be typed in there.

Next, click on the "Continue" button at the bottom right hand corner of your screen (after you scrolled down).

You should now be able to see your results. Please take your mouse and highlight and select your chart (that looks like a spider web) including the numbers. Once highlighted, please "copy" the chart. Once you have copied the chart, please "paste" it into a new Word document.

Attached is my example. This is what your Word document should look like. Just click on this link: Learning Styles Example.

Once you have completed the tasks above, if there is time left in class you can begin working on the writing portion of the assignment. Use the website to read about the learning style you were assigned. You could have a tie based off of your results. The style with the highest score is your dominant learning style. Here is the website again if you need help finding the summaries: http://www.learning-styles-online.com/overview/index.php . Use the tab at the top to find and read about your results. Here is a screen shot to help you find your way:

Once you have read about your style(s), please begin the writing assignment. Below are the questions you should answer. These should be typed in your same Word document. See my example for placement, I saved a section for so you can see where you should type your answers in the document. Below is an outline for each of your paragraphs:

Paragraph One: "Describe your current study and learning techniques.". For full points, this paragraph should contain the following:

  • Describe myself and my current ways of learning, doing homework, and studying for tests but my paragraph may be generalized but is appropriate to task.
  • Include concrete details such as specific examples of locations and methods I currently use but the details may be generalized and it may not be related to the purpose of the paragraph.

Paragraph Two: Describe and identify (tell us) your assigned learning style. For full points this paragraph should contain:

  • A very detailed description of your learning style. The details expand over three or more sentences.
  • You listed the learning style you were assigned.
  • You listed four or more examples of study or homework techniques that should work well with my assigned learning style (found in the description of the style on the website).

Paragraph Three: Describe/discuss new learning or studying techniques you would like to try. Ones you haven't used before. What subjects would these techniques work best for? For full points this paragraph should contain:

  • You described three or more learning and study techniques that will work best for YOU. This includes two new techniques that you read about and will now try.
  • You will also describe which classes/tests you will try these new techniques on.
  • Your description contains at least three classes/tests/assignments you will attempt these new techniques on.
  • The paragraph contains details and full descriptions that relate to you and your current classes and work.

FORMATTING: When it comes to formatting your typing in this assignment, the paragraphs and lines should be double spaced using font size 12, Times New Roman (MLA formatting). Your document should have a proper MLA header. My example that was posted has the proper header (I used period 1 for my example so you will have to type in your proper class period).

The assignment is worth 50 points. The chart is worth 20 points and the writing portion is worth 30. Each paragraph is worth ten points. Make sure you follow the guidelines I posted here. We can finish the paragraphs on Monday but the chart and learning styles inventory needs to be completed today. Save the document as your last name.learningstyles in your documents folder.

Anyone that did not get to give their speech yesterday will go first of the period on Monday.
