LHE First Grade Fun

Last week of September-can you believe it?

In reading this week we will work on accuracy skills. One focus will be beginning and ending sounds. Another will be to blend the letter sounds to read the word.

What you can do to support: When reading together, tell your child, "Say each letter of the word. Stretch out each sound, then put them together and say it fast. Slow down enough to pay attention to the ending sound of the word.

In writing the students will take an idea from their heart map. The student will pick one small moment, then plan their story and write it across the pages of their blank book.

What you can do to support: Continue to tell stories. Point out how everyday expierences can become stories. Touch your fingers as you tell the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

In math this week the students will express the length of an object as a whole number of units such as popsicle sticks or unifix cubes. Example: "This vase is three popsicle sticks long."

What you can do to support: Assist your child measuring everyday objects, emphasizing no gaps or overlaps.
