I just wanted to let you know that I am going to be out of town for a training from May 2nd through May 13th. I will continue to check my email during that time, it will probably just be later in the day as my training ends between 5:00 and 5:30 every evening (even weekends!).
Many of you have probably heard from your child now that we are going to be getting a Facility dog in the classroom. This is the training I am going to. I will be training with the dog for the last 2 weeks of his/her 6 month long training. When I come back, we will have a Facility dog in the classroom each day! There are so many benefits of having a facility dog. They help with motivation, speech, routines, taking turns, series of events, fine motor skills, and plus the emotional benefits of having a loving friend every day, someone to read to with a nonjudgmental ear, and someone to pet or put the deep pressure needed for sensory input.
Here you will find a handout from Canine Companions for Independence (the company I am training with and getting the Facility dog through) all about what the dogs do and their benefits in an educational setting. FACILITYDOG2015_FINAL_LOWRES I also have a book in my room about Facility dogs and how they have helped other classrooms. I will have it in my room until Friday before I give it back to its owner. If you are in the building, feel free to pop in and take a look at it. It is on the counter right by the door.
I hope everyone has a great rest of your week. Feel free to email if you have any questions.
