  1. Read  the ”Ban Plastic Bags?” article in Scholastic Jr.  Collect data.
  2. Read the various arguments on both sides of this issue and collect data at: http://www.debate.org/opinions/should-plastic-bags-be-banned-from-grocery-stores
  3. Choose a partner, and pick a side of the issue. Prepare a one-minute speech to persuade another member of the class to vote pro/con on banning bags in stores in the US.  Use the following guidelines to prepare your speech:
  1. Clearly describe what the issue is, and your position on it

                    -hook(which kind?)

                    -a thesis(which includes the issue,  your            position on it, and 3 reasons)

  1.  Cover each of the 3 reasons with details. Use the elaboration techniques of description, stats and facts, and quote.

~Taking out your writing journal, turn to the "How to Write" section and glue in the "conclusions" typed notes next to the notes we took last week on writing good conclusions.

GRAMMAR

~Sentence Fragment lesson: we took notes on the definition of a sentence fragment, identified what sentences need in order to be complete, and looked at examples of complete senteces/fragments. Next, we got a worksheet that had sentences that needed correction by adding or subtraction punctuation/capitalization. We started it in class, homework if not done. Worksheet due tomorrow!

TABLE STUDY STORIES

We are practicing applying reading targets and literary elements to short fictional stories. Each student got a novel study packet and one of the stories to read and pull apart. ~Put the "STUD" in study for your figurative language test! 5 minutes to go time…
~Literary elements: have figurative language poster out, the final 2 squares are due Monday.
Let me repeat: POSTER due MONDAY.
~Current Events: starting today, we are going to analyze President Obama's Inaugural speech together. I will play a YouTube of the speech, stopping at points for discussion. You are also given a copy of the speech to highlight, circle, and make notes on.
Today: page 1 of his speech. In table families, we will summarize the key points of part 1.
Next week we will continue until we have analyzed his entire speech.
Finally, we will address themes we find, make an inference about his next term in office, and rate his speech.
~Social Studies: Native American Tribe partner flip book construction, continued…

 

Monday:              “Comfy Day” / Pre-AP and Advanced Math Applications Available (due May 10) / Musical Rehearsals begin at CHS / First Day of Track Practice
