Reading
In fifth grade, students will do a variety of fiction and non-fiction reading. Teachers use the ReadyGen reading curriculum, along with other text, to teach vocabulary, reading skills, and comprehension.
Non-fiction reading will be practiced in science and social studies. This year students will be learning to take notes and paraphrasing the information, in their own words, as in a report. Our state report project, spring term, will showcase these skills.
All students are expected to read at least 20 minutes each evening. This can be done silently or reading out loud to a parent. Reading out loud helps develop fluency and provides a great opportunity to discuss vocabulary and the plot.
Readers are leaders!!!!
